Roblox voice chat under 13: what you can ask for

Straight answer: You cannot use Roblox voice chat under 13. A parent’s permission does not change the age rule. Ask about text chat your account allows, or make a plan to talk about voice when you’re older.¹

Why the rule exists

You might just want to talk to your best friend while you play. That makes sense. But voice in a game is not a promise that only your friend can talk to you.

Roblox uses age checks to help limit contact between adults and children. Giving the wrong age can mean settings and chat groups meant for older people. It does not fix the reason for the rule.²

What you can actually get

Start with a smaller request: “Can we look at the text chat options for my age?” Roblox requires an age check for chat, so text is not a way to avoid the check.²

Your parent can use their linked account to open Settings → Parental Controls → Settings you manage → Communication. Roblox’s overview lists Game chat and Friends chat. Another help page calls in-game text Experience chat. Ask your parent to look at the options your account actually shows.³⁴

Game chat is not friends-only. It can include other players of similar ages in the same game. Your parent can decide whether that works for you. Do not assume a text setting also grants voice.³

You could ask to play with two friends your parent knows, with chat off. Or sit together while you play. Put the voice conversation on the calendar for when you are old enough, then check Roblox’s rules again.¹

Do not count on Party chat as an under-13 alternative. Roblox’s parental-controls overview places age limits on it too.³

How to ask

Make this plan yours. Use the names of people you really play with.

1. Name the exact thing. “Can we look at the Roblox text chat settings I’m allowed to use at my age?”
2. Say why it matters. “Mia and I are building a house together. I want to tell her which part I’m working on.”
3. Offer terms. “You can choose the settings and look at my friends list. I’ll play for 30 minutes with the door open when you’re home. We can leave chat off if the choices do not work for us.”
4. Set a check-in. “Can we talk next Sunday about how it went? If someone makes me uncomfortable, I’ll leave and tell you. Can we also plan a voice conversation for after I turn 13?”

If the answer is no

Say okay. Ask, “What would need to change for it to be a yes?” Write the answer down. Ask again in a month, not before. You can be disappointed and still respect the answer.

What not to do

• Do not make your birthday older. A false age can give you settings meant for older people.²
• Do not use someone else’s account, face, or ID. The age check needs to be about you, not someone else.²
• Do not trust sites or videos that promise early access. There is no safe or legitimate bypass. Do not hand over your face, ID, or login. Roblox warns against sharing private account details.⁵
• Do not wear your parent down. Ask once, listen, and keep the next conversation to the date you agreed on.
