Roblox Voice Chat Not Working: What to Check

Straight answer: Voice chat needs an age check (13+), an experience that supports it, and a working microphone. If any of those is missing, voice will not work or will not show up.

Why the rule exists

Voice chat lets players talk out loud to each other inside a Roblox experience. Roblox limits it to users who are 13 or older and have completed an age check.¹ Voice conversations are harder to filter than text, so the requirements are stricter.

Not every experience supports voice chat. Developers choose whether to include it.² Voice chat is also not available in every region.¹ So even if your account is set up correctly, the game you are playing or the place you live might be the reason voice is missing.

What you can actually get

If voice chat is not working, something in the chain is off. Work through each step before moving to the next one.

Check your age verification

You must be 13 or older and have completed an age check. Roblox accepts ID verification and facial age estimation.¹ Phone verification does not grant voice access.¹ If you have not completed an age check, voice will not appear in your settings or in any experience.

Check if the experience supports voice

Developers choose whether to add voice chat to their experience.² If you do not see a headphone icon inside an experience, that game may not support voice. Try a different experience that you know has voice enabled.

Check your region

Voice chat may not be available in your region.¹² If you have completed your age check and still do not see the voice option in any experience, this may be the reason. There is no way around a regional limitation.

Check your mute state and connection

Once you are in a voice-supported experience, look for the microphone icon in the upper left of the screen.²

• A red slash on the icon means you are muted. Tap or click it to unmute.
• A green animation means your mic is active and picking up sound.²

If you do not see the microphone icon at all, you may not be connected to voice yet. Click the headphone icon to join.¹

Check your device microphone

Make sure Roblox has permission to use your microphone in your device settings. Voice chat works on desktop, mobile, VR, PlayStation, and Xbox.² If your mic is not working in other apps either, the problem is with your device, not with Roblox.

Ask your parent to check their settings

If your parent has a linked account, they manage your communication settings through Parental Controls.³ If voice chat is turned off there, you will not see the option even after completing an age check. Your parent can check this from their own device.

How to ask

If you have worked through the checklist above and think a setting your parent controls might be the issue, here is how to bring it up.

Name the exact thing

"I have been trying to figure out why voice chat is not working on Roblox. I think it might be a setting in the Parental Controls. Can you check the Communication settings on your linked account?"

Say why it matters to you

"I want to be able to talk to my friends while we play together instead of having to type everything."

Offer fair terms

• Your parent checks the settings together with you so you both understand what is on and off.
• Your parent keeps control of voice chat through their linked account.
• You agree to tell your parent right away if anything uncomfortable happens in voice chat.

Propose a check-in

"If we get it working, can we try it for two weeks and then talk about how it went? If something goes wrong, you can turn it off from your account."

If the answer is no

Say okay. Ask, "What would need to change for it to be a yes?" Write the answer down. Ask again in a month, not before.

What not to do

• Do not enter a fake birthday. A false age can change the age-based features and settings on your account.
• Do not use someone else's account. A borrowed account has its own age and settings, which may not match yours.
• Do not follow videos or sites that promise to fix voice chat by sharing your login or changing your region. There is no safe or legitimate bypass. Roblox warns that unofficial sites can steal your login information.⁴ Never share your password, ID, or face with a site or video that promises access.
• Do not ask over and over. If your parent said no, repeating the question will not change the answer. A calm conversation a month later might.
