How to Chat With Friends on Roblox

Straight answer: Roblox friends chat requires an age check. If messaging is off, a parent with a linked account can enable it through Parental Controls, then Communication.

Why the rule exists

Roblox checks your age so it can match you with players in a similar age group.¹ This is meant to limit contact between adults and children.²

Chat for players aged 12 and under is filtered by default to block personal information and inappropriate content.³ Without an age check, younger players could end up messaging much older users or sharing details that put them at risk.

What you can actually get

Roblox has more than one way to chat. Friends chat and Game chat are separate features with separate settings, and a parent can control each one through their linked account.⁴

Friends chat (outside games)

Friends chat lets you message people you have added as friends on Roblox without being in a game together.⁴ You can also start group chats with up to five friends.⁵

Once your account passes an age check, users over 9 can use the Chat tab on phones, tablets, and computers, though the screens look slightly different.⁵

• On a phone or tablet: Tap the Chat tab at the bottom of the home screen. Tap an existing conversation to open it, or tap the + button to pick friends and start a new chat.⁵

For 13 and older, it also enables unfiltered messaging and voice chat with those trusted friends.⁵ Access depends on your age group and region.⁵

Party

Roblox is renaming the Party tab to Chat for users over 9; both names refer to the same place where you can chat and start playing together.⁵ According to the Parental Controls Overview, Party is only available to age-checked users above 13 in similar age groups.⁴ If you are under 13, this feature may not be available to you.

A parent with a linked account manages Friends chat and Game chat separately under Parental Controls, then Communication.⁴ A parent can also view, block, and report anyone on your friends list from their parent dashboard.⁴

Offer fair terms

• Start with Friends chat only, so you can message added friends but nothing else changes.
• Your parent makes the change through their linked account and keeps control of the settings.
• Your parent can check your friends list from their dashboard any time.⁴

Propose a check-in

"Can we try it for two weeks and then look at it together? If something goes wrong, you can turn it off from your account."

If the answer is no

Say okay. Ask, "What would need to change for it to be a yes?" Write the answer down. Ask again in a month, not before.

What not to do

• Do not enter a fake birthday. A false age can change the age-based features and settings on your account. That may mean fewer filters and messages from older users.
• Do not use someone else's account. A borrowed account has its own age and settings, which may not match yours or what your parent expects.
• Do not follow videos or sites that promise to remove chat restrictions. There is no safe or legitimate bypass. Roblox warns that unofficial sites can steal your login information.⁶ Never share your password, ID, or face with a site or video that promises access.
• Do not ask over and over. If your parent said no, repeating the question will not change the answer. A calm conversation a month later might.
