How to Enable Text Chat on Roblox

Straight answer: Text chat on Roblox requires an age check. If chat is off or missing, a parent with a linked account can enable it through Parental Controls, then Communication. Availability depends on your age, region, and the game.

Why the rule exists

Roblox checks your age so it can match you with players in a similar age group.² Experience chat is filtered by default to block personal information and inappropriate content.¹³

Without an age check, younger players could end up chatting with much older users or sharing details that put them at risk. The settings exist so a parent can decide what kind of chat you have access to.

What you can actually get

Roblox has two types of text chat, and a parent can control each one separately through their linked account.²

Experience chat (Game chat)

This is text chat inside a game. On a computer, press the / key to open the chat bar. On a phone or tablet, tap the chat icon at the top left of the screen.¹ The game developer has to have chat turned on in that experience for it to work.¹

A parent can enable or disable this under Parental Controls, then Communication, where it may appear as Game chat.² It lets you type messages to other players of a similar age in the same game.

Friends chat

This is a separate setting for messaging friends you have added on Roblox, outside of a game. A parent controls this separately through the same Communication settings.²

Name the exact thing

"Can you turn on Experience chat for me on Roblox so I can type to other players in the same game? The setting is under Parental Controls, then Communication."

Say why it matters to you

"When I play [name the game], I need to type to coordinate with my team. Right now I cannot type anything."

Offer fair terms

• Start with Experience chat only, not Friends chat, so you can type in games but not message people outside them.
• Your parent makes the change through their linked account and keeps control of the settings.
• Your parent can check your friends list any time.

Propose a check-in

"Can we try it for two weeks and then look at it together? If something goes wrong, you can turn it off from your account."

If the answer is no

Say okay. Ask, "What would need to change for it to be a yes?" Write the answer down. Ask again in a month, not before.

What not to do

• Do not enter a fake birthday. A false age can change the age-based features and settings on your account. That may mean less filtering and messages from older users.
• Do not use someone else's account. A borrowed account has its own age and settings, which may not match yours or what your parent expects.
• Do not follow videos or sites that promise to remove chat restrictions. There is no safe or legitimate bypass. Roblox warns that unofficial sites can steal your login information.⁴ Never share your password, ID, or face with a site or video that promises access.
• Do not ask over and over. If your parent said no, repeating the question will not change the answer. A calm conversation a month later might.
