Roblox Text Chat Not Working: What to Check

Straight answer: Text chat might not work if your age check is not done, a parent has not enabled it, or the game does not support it. Hashtags mean a word or phrase was filtered.

Why the rule exists

This guide covers built-in Experience chat, the text chat inside a Roblox game. It does not cover Friends chat, Party chat, or custom chat systems built by developers. If you are a player trying to figure out why chat is not working, start here.

Roblox requires an age check before you can use text chat.¹ This helps Roblox group players by age. A parent with a linked account can manage the chat options available to their child.²

Messages in Experience chat are also filtered to block personal information and inappropriate content.¹³ When you see hashtags in place of words, the filter blocked something.¹ That shows filtering is active; it does not by itself mean chat is broken.

Check if you completed an age check

Roblox requires an age check before chat can be turned on.¹ If your account has not completed one, chat settings may not be available to you or your parent. Look under your account settings for your age verification status.

Check if a parent has enabled chat

If a parent has a linked account, they manage your communication settings through Parental Controls, then Communication.² Depending on your age, a parent may need to give consent before chat becomes available.¹² The exact options they see can vary by account age and region.² A parent cannot always make a missing setting appear.

Check if the game supports chat

Developers choose whether to include text chat in their game.¹ If the chat bar or icon does not appear, that game may not have chat turned on. Try a different game to see if chat works there.

Check your input method

On a computer, press the / key to open the chat bar.¹ On a phone or tablet, tap the chat icon at the top left of the screen.¹ If the bar opens but nothing happens when you type, check that your keyboard is connected and working in other apps first.

Check if your messages are filtered

If you can type but some words turn into hashtags, that is the chat filter.¹ Roblox filters Experience chat messages to block personal information and inappropriate content.³ A blocked message does not by itself mean chat is broken. Offer fair terms

• Your parent checks the settings together with you so you both see what is on and off.
• Your parent keeps control of chat through their linked account.
• If something changes or feels wrong, you tell your parent right away.

Propose a check-in

"Can we check on it together in two weeks? If anything goes wrong, you can turn chat off from your account."

If the answer is no

Say okay. Ask, "What would need to change for it to be a yes?" Write the answer down. Ask again in a month, not before.

If the problem is not a parent setting but something from the checklist above, such as the game itself or your age check, work through those steps first. You can check whether a game supports chat yourself. Ask your parent to help with the official age-check process.

What not to do

• Do not enter a fake birthday. A false age can change the age-based features and settings on your account. You might end up with settings meant for older users.⁵
• Do not use someone else's account. A borrowed account has its own age and settings, which may not match yours or what your parent expects.
• Do not follow videos or sites that promise to remove chat filters or fix chat for you. There is no safe or legitimate bypass. Roblox warns that unofficial sites can steal your login information.⁴ Never share your password, ID, or face with a site or video that promises access.
• Do not ask over and over. If your parent said no, respect their answer. Agree on when to talk again.
