The Fortnite guide
How to enable voice chat in Fortnite
Straight answer: If your Fortnite account is a Cabined Account, voice chat is off until a parent gives consent.1 For all players under 18 it starts Off, and Parental Controls can restrict it.3 Ask your parent first.
This guide is for players under 18 who want voice chat turned on in Fortnite. It covers Cabined Accounts, parental consent, age-based audience limits, and how to ask your parent. It does not cover text chat setup, cross-platform party apps, or other Epic games. All settings and age limits below were checked against Epic's published safety, help, and terms pages in October 2026.
Why the rule exists
Voice chat connects you to other players in real time. Some of those players may be strangers, and some may be adults. Epic limits voice chat for younger accounts so that a parent can decide who you talk to and when.2
If your account was created with an age under 13 (or under your country's age of digital consent, if that is higher), Epic makes it a Cabined Account. Cabined Accounts cannot use voice chat, free text chat, or some other features until a parent or guardian gives consent.1
Even after consent, your parent still controls the audience. That means they choose whether you can talk to everyone, only friends, or no one. Starting with Friends Only is a reasonable first step because it limits voice to people on your friends list, rather than opening chat to every player on an island.2 Your parent keeps the parental controls PIN, and Epic asks for that PIN before certain protected changes.2
What you can actually get
The voice chat you can use depends on your age and your parent's choices:
- Under 10: the highest voice audience your parent can set is Friends Only.2
- 10 to 12: your parent can set voice up to Friends, team members, and connections.2
- 13 and older: your parent can allow a wider audience, depending on the parental controls they choose.2
Ask your parent to go through these steps with you:
- Check your account type. If the account is a Cabined Account, your parent needs to complete the consent process. Epic sends an email with the subject "Your Child Created an Epic Games Account." Your parent clicks the link in that email to give consent and set up parental controls.1
- Set the voice audience. After consent, your parent signs in to your account on the Epic Account Portal and opens Parental Controls. They set Voice Chat to the audience they are comfortable with, such as Friends Only.2
- Change your communication settings in Fortnite. Select your profile icon, then the three dots to open communication options. Choose to change your communication settings. Pick who you can voice chat with: Everybody; Friends, Team Members, and Connections; Friends Only; or Off. For players under 18 this starts Off, and Parental Controls can restrict what you are allowed to pick.3
- Pick the right chat. Party chat lets you talk to the players in your party, across Fortnite experiences. Game chat lets you talk to players in the same island instance, if the island creator supports it.3
If you cannot change the voice setting, the account may still be cabined, or Parental Controls may restrict voice chat. Only your parent can change that.13
The same three dots menu lets you report voice chat. If someone says something that feels wrong, leave the chat, report it, and tell your parent.3
How to ask
Write this down first. Change the friend's name and time so they are true for you.
- Name the exact thing. "Can you turn on voice chat in Fortnite so I can talk to my friends while we play? I would like the audience set to Friends Only."
- Say why it matters. "Jordan and I want to talk during matches instead of stopping to type. It is easier to work together when we can talk."
- Offer terms. "You pick the audience setting. I will only play when you are home. You can check my friends list any time and turn voice off if something goes wrong."
- Set a check-in. "Can we try it for a week and review it next Saturday? If a conversation feels wrong, I will leave the channel and tell you right away."
If the answer is no
Say okay. Ask, "What would need to change for it to be a yes?" Write the answer down. Ask again in a month, not before.
What not to do
- Do not enter a fake birthday. Epic uses your date of birth to decide which features and settings apply to your account, so a wrong age breaks the setup your parent agreed to.1
- Do not try to guess or reset the parental controls PIN. The PIN belongs to your parent. There is no safe or legitimate bypass. Never give your login or personal details to sites or videos that promise to remove parental controls.2
- Do not use someone else's account. Sharing accounts breaks Epic's rules, and the parental controls on that account will not match what your parent agreed to. Epic's terms say you cannot use someone else's account, even if they let you.4
- Do not keep asking every day. Stick to the date you both agreed to revisit the answer.

how to turn on voice chat in fortnite
Ask your parent first. In Fortnite, select your profile icon, then the three dots to change communication settings. Choose Everybody; Friends, Team Members, and Connections; Friends Only; or Off. For players under 18, voice chat starts Off, and Parental Controls can restrict what you can pick. If your account is a Cabined Account, a parent must give consent before voice chat is available.
why is my voice chat not working in fortnite
First check whether the account is a Cabined Account that is still waiting for parental consent. Then select your profile icon and check communication settings from the three dots menu, because voice chat may still be Off. If Parental Controls restrict voice chat, only your parent can change that. Game chat only works on islands where the creator supports it.
can you voice chat in fortnite under 13
Yes, once a parent gives consent for the Cabined Account. Under-10 accounts are limited to Friends Only voice chat at most. Under-13 accounts can reach Friends, team members, and connections at most. Your parent sets the audience in Parental Controls and can change it at any time.
